Today Mayor Buddy Dyer delivered a “State of the City” address, discussing accomplishments and local issues for the city of Orlando, reviewing the past year.
Included in the focus on local issues were the repairs for Lake Eola’s fountain, which was struck by lightning six months ago. Dyer started on the topic by stating, “I couldn’t give a State of the City Address without talking about the state of the Lake Eola Fountain!”
Included in the repair plan is a quick fix courtesy of Disney’s Imagineers, and as a long-term repair plan, the mayor would like to see the fountain as it originally looked, despite some suggestions to create a new, different design. Despite the expense of the insurance deductible for repairs, he plans on working on basic repairs, and if funds come together for upgrades in addition, then those will be dealt with in the future.
Additionally, Dyer is promoting locally-owned Orlando businesses through the distribution of 75,000 complimentary “Buy Local Orlando” cards through which Orlando residents may enjoy discounts through shopping with 360 participating local area businesses.
Dyer also highlighted new jobs, including 1,000 new jobs being produced through the construction of the Amway Center, and 500 new jobs created in Mills 50, Downtown South, College Park, Audobon Park, and Ivanhoe Village.
The Federal stimulus package created an “intelligent transportation system” to guide drivers through efficient routes of traffic, as well as helped retain a number of positions in the local police department and fire department.
Eola Park is nestled within an urban community in the heart of downtown Orlando, where many residents desire an active city life.
