Lake Eola is quite the belle of the holiday ball for the 2009 season. Despite the city’s budget cuts on holiday decorations, Lake Eola will still be the prize, hosting a tree lighting ceremony for the city of Orlando. Earlier in the season, Mayor Buddy Dyer eliminated a tree lighting ceremony at city hall, and cut back on decorating the downtown posts with lights. The only holiday staple decor that was promised to Orlando was the 700-pound gold star that hangs each year over Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando. A number of other decorations were kept in storage this year due to budget cuts and lack of labor.
Festivities for the tree lighting ceremony at Lake Eola involved a menorah lighting, holiday treats, and animals from the Central Florida Zoo. The Rosemont Oasis after-school program involved their students in the tree lighting ceremony by having them sing carols in front of the 31-foot tall tree.
Despite the budget cuts, officials planned to have events and decor centrally located at
Lake Eola Park to continue yearly celebrations for Orlando citizens. Lake Eola is a
The 23-acre body of water formed by a sinkhold in the heart of downtown Orlando. In the late 1800s Lake Eola and its surrounding land was donated to the city of Orlando and became a landmark and centerpiece of the city with its paddle boats and unique fountain. In 1912 the original fountain at Lake Eola was installed, costing $10,000. IN 1957 the fountain was replaced, and in 2009 lightning struck the fountain, calling for a number of repairs and restoration of the historic landmark.
Lake Eola offers a number of scenic and historic views, including The VUE at Lake Eola. The VUE is a new 36-story, 375-unit
luxury condo high rise located in the heart of downtown Orlando. The VUE overlooks Lake Eola, and is located on the corner of Rosalind Avenue and Robinson Street. Residents of the VUE enjoy beautiful breathtaking views of Lake Eola Park year-round, and enjoy a breathtaking view of the holiday decor.
