In late August during a terrible storm, Eola Girl was struck by lightning and rendered out of order. The historic fountain gracing the center of Lake Eola in downtown Orlando has been out of commission ever since.
Thanks to Phantom of The Opera, the city of Orlando will get necessary funds to use toward repair and restoration of Lake Eola’s historic fountain in downtown Orlando.
During January and February of 2010, Phantom of the Opera, a musical made famous on Broadway, is coming to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. Tickets are on sale now, and for every ticket sold in October, the production company is donating $5 to a fund going towards repairs for the fountain. Currently, the city of Orlando does not know how much its fine arts insurance policy will cover for repairs.
With its image found on Orlando’s city signs as well as the city seal, the fountain on Lake Eola in downtown Orlando has been an icon of Orlando for about sixty years. Considered a uniquely beautiful beacon, residents of Orlando have embraced Eola Girl as a symbol of Orlando for decades.
