How Does Orlando Make You Smile? Film Contest Underway

What is it about Orlando that makes you smile?  Maybe it’s the theme parks, or scenic Lake Eola and Eola Park.  Whatever the reason for your smile, Kids First!, the coalition for quality children’s media, is hosting a two-part film contest titled “Orlando Makes me Smile” where filmmakers can show why Orlando makes them smile.

Kids ages 13-18 are invited to participate in the student contest, which is sponsored by the Florida Film Festival, the Kids First! organization, and Orlando and Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

In order to participate to win for the Best Student Short film, entrants must be between the ages of 13-18 and able to creatively convey what it is about Orlando that makes them smile.

A second related competition is open for filmmakers 19 and up.  The 19-and-up competition entrants are candidates for the Best Indie Short film.

For each category, this competition is a short film contest.  The film must be the original work of the person entering the contest. Entries may be animated or live-action, and must be three minutes or under.  Winners will have their film as part of the official selection for the Florida Film Festival and the Kids First! Film festival.  This contest plays off of Orlando’s tourist destination marketing slogan, “Orlando Makes me Smile.”

This film contest costs $25 to enter and must be received by January 11. The full set of forms, rules, and details are available at the Kids First! Website.

In late February, film winners for both categories will be announced.  Each winner will receive a family vacation for four in Orlando.  This prize includes cost of airfare, three nights of lodging, vehicle rental, and theme park tickets.  Also part of the prize, winners receive four filmmaker passes for the 19th annual Florida Film Festival, to be held April 8-19 2010.  Winners will have their short film premiered at the festival.
